Client Project Proposal
For my client project, I am planning to design a new YouTube icon for a friend. Their channel is based on looping different parts of the games and music they play, but it has no icon or banner. He proposed the idea of me creating the icon for it earlier in February, and I recently decided to accept it. I am going to ask him what he would like in the icon soon, and I will decide what software to use afterwards (probably illustrator).
Update
The client has decided what he wants the youtube banner to be. Because the channel is REALLY meme based, an because he's really strange sometimes, he wants his channel name floating over a large bowl of oatmeal (yes, I'm not sure why either, even if it is meme based). He has his mind set on me doing the icon in any way I want, and insists that he has no part in it. I'm planning to use two prominent letters from his channel name and making them look more interesting with a symbol that I will ask him about. An example of me drawing an idea of what he wants is shown below.
He ended up being ok with what I created for him!

Final Products
The logo and banner I had created for him are shown. The idea for the background came from the contrasting blue and yellow that were present in the name of his channel. He told me to do whatever I wanted for the icon, and insisted that he has no say in its design.

Reflection
This was an interesting project for me in a lot of different ways. My client and I have been friends for years and I had already decided to make this YouTube banner and logo for him, whether or not it was for a grade. However, what he wanted surprised me. He basically told me to make a banner with nothing but a bowl oatmeal and his channel name. I honestly don't know why, but I'm not really in any position to disagree with him. He also decided to let me handle the logo on my own, and he was super insistent on me doing it without his input. In the end, the project went smoothly for the most part.
There were a couple of problems I had encountered with this project though. As mentioned before, he didn't really give me much detail on what he really wanted in the logo or banner, other than oatmeal and a name. A lot of the design was up to me, and I really didn't know if he would like it or not. Another issue was the size of the image. I had finished the logo at one point but had the size of the image too big for a channel logo, so I had to awkwardly restart. I would have just taken the image and made it smaller, but then the logo was squished. Finding good colors for the background was difficult for me. Most colors I tried just didn't work at all.
Looking through my final products for him, I would've changed quite a few things about it. Mainly the bowl of oatmeal that he, for whatever reason, wanted. I would make the oatmeal part of it more realistic. I would add more detail to the overall bowl and design as well. The background might also be something to improve. I took different images and put several filters on them to make them into some interesting fiber-looking things in the background, but I would love to try out other designs that can be created through Photoshop. Looking back at the logo design, I probably should've used the pathfinder on the J and the L to combine them and make them look smoother. My client likes these designs, even if I see room for a lot of improvement.
Overall, I learned a lot from this project. I learned little things, like the idea of using Photoshop on something created in illustrator (How did that never cross my mind ever) and how to create neat effects using filters. However, I learned a couple major lessons as well, mainly to believe in myself more (as corny as that sounds) and to take my time with these projects. It helped me learn more about Illustrator and Photoshop.
